Wintry Blast Over The South Island Has Queenstown Celebrating

A torrent of snowfall has Queenstown ski-field operators jumping for joy after what could be best described as a “lean start to the season”. Ever since The Remarkables and Coronet Peak ski-fields opened their doors on June 24 and 11 respectively, the lack of natural snow cover meant that ski field managers at both resorts had to turn to their collection of snow-guns to put some powder on the trails.

Whether you believe in global warming or not the fact is 2016 has experienced the warmest six months in recorded history, according to the boffins at the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research - which is why the fresh blanket of snow deposited on the slopes of Queenstown ski-fields has everyone in town on their hands and knees thanking the snow-gods.

Coronet Peak ski area manager Ross Copland told reporters he was relieved at “mother nature’s gift” and expects a “cracker of a few days’ skiing with more snow to come.” Meanwhile over at The Remarkables another Ross, ski area manager Ross Lawrence, described the scene on his mountain as “beautiful” and that he too expected more snowfall in the coming days. Staff at The Remarkables estimate between 30cm and 40cm of fresh powder in the next few days.

This is great news for skiers and snowboarders around Queenstown who have been patiently waiting for fresh snowfall to start their seasons in earnest. Ross Copland over at Coronet Peak encourages everyone to make the most of the fresh snowfall, urging everyone to “Get on up here, get some wax on your skis or board and get out and enjoy it."
